Heat Pumps

Heat Pumps

A heat pump is an all electric product that can both heat and cool your home. They work identically to an air conditioner during a hot and humid Minnesota summer by compressing refrigerant which is used to remove heat energy from the home. During cold weather, a heat pump “reverses” the cooling process. Instead of moving heat energy out of the home and dissipating it outside, a heat pump removes heat energy from outside, and uses this to heat your home.

Hybrid Heating

Heat pumps are typically not well suited for heating your home the entire length of a Minnesota winter season. Heat pumps are designed more for milder winter weather (there are exceptions like the Mitsubishi H2i models). “So what’s the point of them then?” you might be asking. The place where a heat pump really shines in our northern climate is as part of a hybrid heating system.

A hybrid heating system is the combination of a gas furnace and an electric heat pump. Heat pumps are more efficient during mild weather, while a gas furnace is the definite choice when our nights and days drop to freezing. A hybrid system intelligently switches between the two pieces of equipment depending on the outside temperature.
